Technical brilliance, commercial judgment and understanding people are different skills — and good teams need all three.


There are few things I enjoy more than working with somebody who knows considerably more than I do.


Give me the toxicologist who can explain an endpoint I have never seen.

The analytical chemist who understands exactly why a method is failing.

The regulatory strategist who has been through enough FDA meetings to recognize where the landmines are.

The scientist who has spent fifteen years studying a mechanism most of us discovered existed approximately eight minutes ago.


I love smart people.

I have spent a large part of my career surrounding myself with people smarter than me.


But there is an important distinction we don't make often enough:

Being exceptionally knowledgeable about something does not make someone exceptionally knowledgeable about everything.


Expertise has borders.

Everybody's does.


And understanding where those borders are may be one of the clearest signs of real expertise.


Most real expertise is narrow.


We sometimes talk about “experts” as though expertise were a personality type.


It isn't.

It is expertise in something.


A physician is not automatically a toxicologist.

A toxicologist is not automatically a pharmacologist.

A pharmacologist is not automatically an analytical chemist.

An analytical chemist is not automatically a formulation scientist.

A cultivator is not automatically a physician.

A regulatory strategist is not automatically a marketer.

A marketer is not automatically a scientist.

And the scientist who developed the technology may not be the best person to explain why a customer should buy it.


None of those statements diminish anybody.

They recognize specialization.


The modern scientific and business worlds are far too complicated for one person to meaningfully master all of them.


That's why we build teams.


The problem isn't narrow expertise.


The problem begins when confidence becomes wider than competence.


There is something enormously reassuring about someone who can say:

“That part is outside my area. We need someone else.”


That isn't weakness.

That's judgment.


The dangerous version is the person whose credibility in one field convinces them — or everyone around them — that their authority automatically transfers into another.


Sometimes it happens because of status.

Sometimes because of ego.

Sometimes because nobody wants to challenge the smartest person in the room.

And sometimes because the person genuinely doesn't recognize where their knowledge ends.


Those are expensive mistakes.

In healthcare they can become dangerous ones.


“I don't know” is an expert answer.


Early in a career, admitting you don't know something can feel risky.

You worry everybody else knows.

You worry you're exposing yourself.

You think competent people are supposed to have answers.


Then you work with enough genuinely brilliant people and discover something interesting:

They say “I don't know” all the time.


Followed by:

“Let's find out.”


Or:

“That's not really my area. Ask Sarah.”


Or:

“I'm not convinced we're asking the right question.”


That's not insecurity.

It is intellectual maturity.


The more complicated the problem, the less suspicious I am of uncertainty.

What makes me nervous is immediate certainty about something complicated.


Good teams don't need one person who knows everything.


They need people who know different things.

Interdisciplinary research exists for precisely this reason.


Complex problems routinely require different conceptual frameworks, methodologies and professional perspectives. Research on interdisciplinary science teams consistently shows the potential value of combining complementary expertise — while also showing that simply putting experts in the same room isn't enough. Teams still have to build shared understanding, communicate across disciplinary languages, clarify roles and develop trust.


That is true far beyond academia.

Think about drug development.


You may need:

Discovery scientists.

Toxicologists.

Bioanalytical scientists.

Clinical scientists.

Statisticians.

Regulatory professionals.

Manufacturing experts.

Quality teams.

Commercial strategists.

Marketers.

Business-development people.

Medical affairs.

Patient voices.

Potentially payers.

Potentially investors.


Nobody needs to become everybody else.

The trick is understanding enough about one another's disciplines to solve the same problem together.


Translation is its own expertise.


This gets overlooked constantly.


Knowing something and communicating it well are not the same skill.

I spent years working with scientists who could understand things I would need several whiteboards and possibly divine intervention to comprehend.


Then someone would ask:

“So why should the client care?”


And the room would go quiet.

Not because the science wasn't valuable.

Because translating highly technical knowledge into commercial relevance requires another skill set.


Sometimes my job was essentially:

Tell me everything. I'll figure out how to explain why it matters.


That doesn't make me smarter than the scientist.

It makes me useful in different ways.


And that's exactly how good teams should work.


Some people sell.


Some people notice why the sale is happening.

These are also different skills.


Your strongest salesperson may be extraordinary at:

Building relationships.

Creating momentum.

Following up.

Handling objections.

Asking for the business.

Closing.


Fantastic.


But somebody else may be sitting one seat over thinking:

Why are prospects repeatedly getting uncomfortable at the same point in the conversation?

Why are customers describing our value differently than our marketing team does?

Why does everybody say price is the problem when their behavior suggests something else?

Why does this buyer keep looking at their scientific advisor before answering?

Why are we losing deals at exactly the same stage?


This person belongs in the room too.


Because business development is not merely a sales activity.

It is an information-generating system.


Every customer interaction creates information about:

Needs.

Language.

Objections.

Perceptions.

Competitors.

Trust.

Pricing.

Market maturity.

Organizational politics.

Human behavior.


Someone needs to recognize the patterns and feed them back into strategy.


Marketing should not be downstream from sales.


Nor should sales be downstream from marketing.

They should be talking constantly.


A salesperson hears:

“Your turnaround time worries me.”


Once, that's a conversation.

Twenty times, that's market intelligence.


A scientist hears:

“Customers don't understand this endpoint.”


Once, that's an explanation.

Repeatedly, that's a communication problem.


A marketer notices that buyers keep using a phrase nobody inside the company uses.

That's messaging intelligence.


A strategist sees all three things happening and asks:

What are we learning here?


This is where the disciplines begin to overlap productively.


Not because everybody suddenly becomes an expert in everything.

Because everybody contributes a different part of the picture.



And then there is expertise in people.


This one gets dismissed because it isn't always accompanied by a technical credential.


Some people are exceptionally good at noticing humans.

They notice when the room changes.

When the energy drops.

When someone is agreeing verbally but disengaging behaviorally.

When the nominal decision-maker isn't actually the influential person.

When a scientist needs encouragement rather than another sales script.

When a customer needs more information rather than more persuasion.

When a cultural difference is being mistaken for resistance.

When somebody is asking a technical question that is really about trust.


These observations are not magical mind-reading.

They're information.

And they can be extraordinarily valuable in business.


Technical expertise answers:

Can we do this?


Commercial expertise asks:

Will someone buy this?


Behavioral understanding asks:

What does this person actually need in order to believe us?


You need all three.


This is why curiosity matters so much.


You don't have to be the expert in everything happening around you.

You need enough understanding to recognize when another discipline matters.


Enough humility to ask for help.

Enough curiosity to ask intelligent questions.

Enough listening ability to understand the answer.

And enough judgment not to pretend you understood something you didn't.


This is the difference between:

“I need to prove I belong in this conversation.”


and:


“I need to understand enough to help this conversation move forward.”


The second person is often far more useful.


Expertise also needs common ground.


Different disciplines develop their own languages.


Scientists do it.

Clinicians do it.

Regulatory people do it.

Marketers definitely do it.


Every profession accumulates jargon, assumptions and ways of framing problems that feel completely normal inside the profession and occasionally incomprehensible to everyone else.


Interdisciplinary research shows that collaboration gets harder when disciplines differ in terminology, methods, assumptions and professional norms. Building shared understanding takes time and deliberate communication.


Sound familiar?

It should.


This is also what happens between:

Scientists and sales.

Indian teams and U.S. buyers.

Engineers and marketers.

Executives and customers.

Healthcare professionals and patients.

Researchers and investors.


Nobody is necessarily wrong.

They're operating from different frameworks.


Someone has to build the bridge.


Sometimes the most valuable person is the bridge.


Not the world's leading authority.

Not the loudest person.

Not the person with the biggest title.


The person who can understand enough of several worlds to help them communicate.

Who knows which question to ask.

Who recognizes when two people are using the same word but meaning different things.


Who can say:

“I think you two actually agree. You're just describing the problem differently.”


Or:

“Before we keep debating this, I think we need the toxicologist.”


Or:

“The customer isn't questioning the data. They're questioning whether they can trust the process.”


This is expertise of a different kind.

And organizations routinely undervalue it.


Every profession has blind spots.


Scientists can fall in love with the science.

Salespeople can fall in love with the opportunity.

Marketers can fall in love with the message.

Executives can fall in love with the strategy.

Consultants can fall in love with their framework.


We all have a tendency to interpret new problems through whatever tool we already carry.

The old saying about every problem looking like a nail when you have a hammer exists for a reason.


Expertise can sharpen judgment.

It can also create tunnel vision.

That's another reason diverse teams matter.


Someone needs to ask:

What aren't we seeing because of the way we're trained to look at this?


The expert I trust knows when to hand off the microphone.


There is a particular confidence required to say:

“This isn't mine.”


Especially after you've established yourself as knowledgeable.

But that is precisely the kind of professional I want around me.


Someone who doesn't need to win every intellectual exchange.

Someone comfortable introducing the person who knows more.

Someone who understands that credibility is not diminished by boundaries.

It is strengthened by them.


Because ultimately I don't need you to know everything.

I need you to:

Know what you know.

Recognize what you don't.

Know where to look.

Know who to ask.

Ask good questions.

Stay curious.

Tell me the truth.


And don't bullshit me in between.


You don't have to be the expert.


This is particularly important for younger professionals.

You do not have to wait until you possess twenty years of experience before you can contribute something valuable.


Maybe you ask the question everybody else stopped asking years ago.

Maybe you recognize a pattern because you have not yet become accustomed to it.

Maybe you connect two ideas because your background crosses disciplines.

Maybe you understand the customer better than the technical experts do.

Maybe your job is simply to get the right people talking to one another.


This counts.


Useful people aren't always the ones holding the answer.

Sometimes they're the ones who know how to find it.


Expertise has borders.


Good judgment recognizes them.

Curiosity crosses them.

Collaboration connects them.

And humility keeps us from pretending they aren't there.


So the next time somebody tells you they're an expert, don't immediately ask whether they're right.


Ask something more useful:

Expert in what?


Then:

Who else should be in this conversation?


These two questions can change everything.


I don't expect you'll agree with everything you read here.

But I do expect you'll at least think about it.
